To end the book famine faced by people with visual disability the Social Immersion team of Jyoti Nivas College Post Graduate Centre volunteered to record 48 books for visually challenged people for Samarthanam Trust. The duration of this initiative was from March 30, 2021 to June 14, 2021.The pdf books are converted into audio form using Daisy Consortium Oriented Book Index (OBI)4.1. IOS 4.1 Software was used for iPhone, voice recorder was used for Android and for windows students used dxdiag OS bit with range of 32/64 for helping visually impaired persons. 48 students from MBA, MCom (FA) and MA enthusiastically participated in this initiative to record books. Thus, our students contributed to Sugamya Pustakalaya, which is a collaborative effort of TCS, Daisy Forum of India and NIEPVD (National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities), Government of India.
On March 30, 2021, Ms. Aishwarya, Volunteer coordinator of Samarthanam Trust for disabled gave virtual orientation to social immersion committee members from 2 pm to 3 pm in the conference hall. She explained the procedure to download the software and the recording process to the students. Our director, Dr. Sr. Lalitha Thomas spoke about the significance of this initiative and the need to contribute to the society during the orientation program. Sister inspired the students to be solicitous to differently-abled people in our society during the time of the pandemic. After the orientation, a preliminary selection was conducted and 48 students were identified for this noble initiative. On June 14, 2021, the students successfully uploaded the audio books. The faculty coordinator for the programme was Dr. Philcy Antony and the student coordinator was Ms. Ruhee Pandey from the department of MBA. The students received certificates from the trust for their involvement. Students have made a meaningful contribution to the society while they were confined at homes during the second wave of Covid-19. Our students have cherished the experience of storytelling through this noble initiative of social immersion committee.
